Creating Calm Corners: Cosy Winter Decorating Ideas Inspired by Nature
The Magic of a Cosy Corner
When the temperature drops and the days grow shorter, we instinctively begin to retreat indoors — not just into our homes, but into pockets of quiet within them. A cosy corner isn’t just a decorating idea — it’s an emotional balm. A little space carved out for calm, comfort, and that first cup of tea while the rest of the house wakes up.
My favourite calm corner is actually a recent one. Last summer, we added a bay window where an old chimney breast used to be. Our living room sits on the side of a steep hill, and with all our windows facing east or west, we’d realised we were missing out on direct winter sun for nearly half the year. Knocking through the chimney and adding the new window not only brought in light — it opened up a view to the garden where we’ve carefully planted year-round greenery.
Now that space is filled with cushions, a comfy seat, and the perfect spot to curl up with the kids and a storybook. The light streams in during the day, and in the evenings, a soft glow from one of my handmade lampshades gives it a peaceful, golden hush.
Why Lighting is Everything
If I could give just one tip for creating a calm space, it would be this: get the lighting right.
Lighting shapes how a space feels. Bright and cool-toned lighting can be energising — great for task-based spaces or morning routines. But soft, warm light invites slowness. It soothes frayed nerves, softens shadows, and signals to your brain that it’s time to rest.
We never use the overhead lights in our living room unless we’re tearing the place apart in search of a toy at bedtime. Instead, we have three carefully placed lamps that gently light the room. My handmade lampshades are designed for this exact kind of glow — filtering light through organic cotton and storybook-inspired illustrations.
For families with young children, smart bulbs can be a quiet magic trick: fade the lights gently at bedtime, and let them fall asleep watching a woodland fox or a gliding barn owl softly disappear into night.

Winter Textures and Woodland Inspiration
People often think of winter as grey and sparse, but to me, it’s rich with inspiration. Bare branches, bark textures, frost-glazed moss, the hush of a sky heavy with snow. There’s something magical about this time of year — and so many folk tales begin in that stillness.
Whilst springtime is my main inspiration, I also take a lot of my seasonal colour palette from cold winter walks — sage greens and ochres, dusty pinks like frozen rosehips, the dark blue of twilight. These colours find their way into my work, whether it’s the soft earth tones of my Red Squirrel lampshade or the moody calm of the barn owl design.
Simple Styling Ideas for Cosy Spaces
Creating a cosy corner doesn’t mean buying armfuls of new things. Often, it’s about seeing differently — shifting things around, adding texture, turning down the lights. Here are a few of my favourite ideas:
Layer textiles – Mix cushions with different weaves: knits, velvet, linen. Softness invites slowness.
Add scent – A candle or oil burner with lavender or cedarwood instantly adds warmth.
Bring in life – A small evergreen potted plant, even a sprig of pine in a jug, keeps that nature connection alive.
Use wall space – A simple hanging print or a child’s drawing in a wooden frame brings personality without clutter.
Focus on one view – Position your nook to face a window, a corner of bookshelves, or even a favourite artwork. Even the tiniest nook can feel special with the right attention. A chair, a lamp, and a blanket can become a little sanctuary.

Why Calm Corners Matter More Than Ever
The world is a loud, fast, scrolling place. Especially in winter, when we’re already feeling the chill — both outside and in. A calm space at home offers a kind of emotional shelter. It’s where you go to read with your children. Where you finally pause after the dinner rush. Where you sit and breathe for a moment before the next thing.
I think we’re all craving slowness, craving meaning — and that’s what these little spaces give us. A reminder that not everything has to be immediate or bright or productive. Some things are just for being.
If you’re looking to add a handmade touch to your own calm space, I’ve curated a few lampshades that feel especially cosy this time of year:
Barn Owl Lampshade – soft skies and quiet flight
Red Squirrel Lampshade – warm woodland storytelling
Sleepy Cats Lampshade – peaceful teals and cosy memories
