The Magic of Storybook Lighting: Lampshades That Tell a Tale
There’s a magic in a room lit by a story.
Not the kind told aloud, but the kind glimpsed — in the flicker of light across a fox’s tail, in a child’s hand brushing the edge of a lampshade as they pause to take in the scene. These are the stories that don’t need words. They unfold softly, in shadow and shape, in lines of illustration and the glow of light.
This is storybook lighting — a term I use to describe lighting that doesn’t just brighten a room, but awakens it.
What is Storybook Lighting?
To me, storybook lighting means more than practicality. It means creating something that tells a tale, or something that hints at a journey. It’s about the quiet thrill of childhood wonder: the feeling that you’ve stumbled into a secret world, and if you sit still long enough, the story might just unfold in front of you.
Sometimes these stories are inspired by folk tales. Sometimes they come from real-life moments — like a woodland walk, a half-asleep wondering, a sighting of a heron in flight. Something that sparks the imagination. Every one of my lampshades starts with a spark — often from a folk tale, but also from my everyday life as a parent and nature-lover. Some are quiet and gentle, some filled with energy and movement, but all are designed to bring story and emotion into your home.
Whether hung above a reading nook or softly glowing beside a child’s bed, they help set the tone of a space. They’re meant to invite you in — to make you pause, look closer, and feel something. Wonder. Calm. Curiosity. Joy.
Little Red, Reimagined
One of my most clearly “storybook” designs is the Red Riding Hood lampshade — but this version tells a slightly different tale. Rather than fear or danger, I wanted to capture courage, companionship, and curiosity. In this illustration, Red and the Wolf aren’t foes; they’re fellow adventurers, exploring the wild woods side by side. Their story is one of trust, of calm wandering through the trees as the sun is low in the sky. It’s a lampshade filled with possibility — and just enough mystery to make you wonder what happens next?
I’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes thoughts in a “story behind the making” post next month, but for now, it remains one of my favourite reimaginings.
My most Fairytale-like lampshade is probably the Mermaid Lampshade. A whole underwater world lives on this one — a gathering of mermaids swimming through a purple sea above coral reefs teeming with fish and sea plants. I spent so much time drawing each mermaid and building the composition, that it became a kind of story I lived inside for a while. There are moments of mystery, sisterhood, magic, and peace — it’s a lampshade that invites you to dive in.
Other favourites include the Fox Lampshade, which looks like it’s leapt straight out of a picture book, and the Barn Owl, inspired by evening hooting heard in the evening near our home.
Such stories matter at bedtime - they are how we make sense of the world. From myths that teach us about bravery and kindness, to picture books that soothe children to sleep — storytelling is a powerful thread in our lives. When our homes hold onto those stories — through art, light, or decor — they become places not just of rest, but of meaning.
Add a Little Storybook Magic to Your Home
If you’re looking to create a space that nurtures imagination, storybook lighting is one of the simplest and most beautiful ways to do it. My illustrated lampshades are designed not just to light a room — but to tell a tale with every flick of the switch. Whether for a child’s room or your own cosy corner, I hope each design brings a little wonder into your world.
