The Story Behind the Otter Lampshade – Inspired by River Life and Joyful Nature Spotting
The Otter Lampshade grew from years of hopeful glances at the water during everyday dog walks, listening to neighbours’ stories about otters living in the nearby lakes and rivers and wondering if I might ever see them for myself. When that first sighting finally happened, it felt less like a rare wildlife moment and more like being welcomed into a hidden world that had been there all along.
That sense of discovery — of noticing what lives alongside us, often unseen or beneath the surface — became the starting point for this design.
Inspired by Local Rivers and Wildlife
For several years, my neighbours had told stories of otters living in the lakes and rivers near our home. On daily dog walks, I kept a hopeful eye on the water — scanning the reeds, watching for ripples, wondering if today might be the day. Four years later, it finally happened. We’re used to herons swooping overhead and fish breaking the surface, but this felt different — a glimpse of something elusive, playful, and wonderfully alive.
Eurasian otters are the native species found across the UK. Once rare, their gradual return to our rivers is a hopeful conservation story. If you’re interested in learning more about how these animals are protected and supported, organisations like The Wildlife Trust share wonderful resources about river habitats and British wildlife.
For me, this lampshade is a celebration of those local waterways — the lakes and rivers near our home where wildlife surprises you when you least expect it. Otters have a special presence. Curious, social, and full of personality, they seem to move through their world with confidence and joy. That sense of connection — to place, to nature, and to the small wonders close to home — became the heart of this design.
Creating Playful, Flowing Energy Through Nature-Inspired Design
The idea truly clicked when I thought back to an earlier memory from nearly twenty years ago. I once visited a wildlife sanctuary where you could watch otters swimming underwater through a large viewing window.
I remember standing there, completely absorbed as they tumbled and twisted through the water, weaving through reeds and circling one another with effortless grace. That feeling of fluid movement and weightlessness stayed with me — and it became the atmosphere I wanted to capture.
From Sketchbook to Handmade Lampshade
The first version of this design actually began as a small doodle last year, scribbled in my sketchbook. When I returned to it, the illustration took around a month to complete.
To capture their movement, I studied photographs and nature footage, (including many, many, many episodes of Springwatch,) paying close attention to how otters move, dive, and interact with each other. I felt it was really important to capture their playful energy and curiosity, the confidence of their underwater movement and the gentle flow of water and surrounding river plants.
The colour palette brings together calm river blues and soft greens, balanced with the lively motion of the otters themselves — energetic, but still soothing.

A Calm Design Full of Life
Although the scene is full of movement, the overall feeling is peaceful. There’s a sense of floating, of quiet immersion in another world.
This makes the Otter Lampshade wonderfully versatile. It works beautifully in nature-inspired nurseries and children’s bedroom, calm reading corners, family living spaces and homes that simply love British wildlife and gentle, storybook design. Like many of my pieces, it reflects themes that run throughout my work: family connection, nature observation, and the quiet magic of everyday landscapes.
Each Otter Lampshade is printed on organic cotton, designed and handmade in the UK and made to order to reduce waste. Because every piece is made especially for you, it carries the care and intention of slow, thoughtful making.
