The Story Behind the Deer Woodland Lampshade – Inspired by Autumn Walks and Woodland Wonder
As soon as August begins to soften into September, I start noticing the first hints of autumn. The air changes before the leaves do. Mornings feel a little cooler, scarves become tempting again, and woodland walks take on that familiar sense of anticipation — the feeling that the season is quietly turning a page.
That is the feeling I wanted to capture in my new Deer Woodland Lampshade: not the deep, dark, soggy heart of autumn, but the golden beginning of it, when the woods are still warm with summer light and the leaves are only just starting to glow.
Fallow Deer in the Woodland
The deer in this illustration are fallow deer, with their beautiful spotted coats and warm reddish-brown colouring. Although they were introduced to Britain centuries ago by the Normans, they have become such a familiar part of many British landscapes that they feel deeply woven into our woodland scenery.
I've always loved the fleeting breathlessness of spotting a deer in the wild. When we lived in Bristol, our house backed onto a nature reserve. The woodland sat above our garden, separated by a retaining wall which meant the ground was level with the top of our fence. Quite often, deer would lean down over the top to nibble the leaves from the trees and shrubs in our borders.
One memory has stayed with me: watching from an upstairs window on a drizzly birthday morning, when a group of four deer appeared beyond the fence, moving quietly through the wet undergrowth. Everything else seemed to fall away for a moment. It felt calm and free and almost impossibly peaceful — one of those rare moments when watching wildlife leaves you completely still.
From Sketchbook to Finished Lampshade
This lampshade had been quietly forming in my mind for a long time, but the composition finally clicked during an early autumn walk last year. The sun was filtering through the trees in long golden shafts, and a sudden movement deeper in the woodland made me imagine a small group of deer running just beyond sight. I began to picture the scene not as a wildlife portrait, but as the opening page of a story — the moment before an adventure begins, when the forest feels alive with possibility.
I started this piece shortly after launching my Otter Lampshade earlier in the year, and the design took several months to complete, worked on in between a much larger illustration project that has occupied my studio for over a year (I’m hoping to share more about that soon).
The most important elements for me were light filtering through the trees, creating that soft woodland glow, and a sense of depth and storytelling, so that the viewer feels drawn into the scene rather than simply looking at it.
A Palette of Golden Woodland Light
The colour palette is very much inspired by early autumn woodlands, with rust orange leaves, ochre yellow highlights, touches of moss green and teal in the deeper undergrowth. When the lampshade is illuminated, these colours create a soft golden woodland effect, almost as if evening sunlight is glowing through the trees. The overall mood is cosy, comforting, and gently nostalgic; the visual equivalent of returning home after a woodland walk with cold cheeks and muddy boots.
A perfect lampshade for nurseries and living rooms
Although this design would look beautiful in a woodland nursery or child’s bedroom, I deliberately kept the palette sophisticated enough for adult interiors too. I can imagine it equally well in a cosy living room, a reading corner with a stack of books, a cottage-style hallway, or any space that would benefit from a touch of autumn woodland home décor.
It’s one of those wildlife designs that feels equally at home in children’s spaces and adult interiors.
Handmade in the UK
Each Deer Woodland Lampshade is printed on certified organic cotton by a small UK printer and made to order in my studio to help reduce waste. It is available in 20 cm, 30 cm, and 40 cm diameters, and can be made as either a ceiling pendant or a table or floor lamp shade.
Because every lampshade is made especially for the customer, it carries the slow, thoughtful approach that sits at the heart of my business.
A Thoughtful Gift for Nature Lovers
This design would make a particularly lovely gift for nature lovers, woodland décor enthusiasts, cottagecore fans, wildlife lovers, and new parents creating a woodland nursery. It would also be a beautiful choice for an autumn birthday gift for someone who feels happiest among trees and changing leaves.
As the evenings begin to draw in later this year, I hope this lampshade brings a little of that golden woodland warmth indoors — a reminder of crisp leaves underfoot, filtered sunlight through the trees, and the excitement of a new season beginning.
