Why I Use Organic Cotton for My Handmade Lampshades

When I first started Ceridwen Hazelchild Design back in the early 2010s, my journey began not with lampshades, but with illustrated tote bags. At the time, reusable bags weren’t yet the norm — and certainly not ones featuring hand-drawn artwork. I wanted to help reduce plastic bag usage by offering something practical and beautiful.
Now, years later, while I no longer make tote bags (so many of us have a cupboard full now, don’t we?), that commitment to sustainability remains at the heart of my work — especially in the materials I choose. And that’s why all my lampshades are made using certified organic cotton.
A Natural Choice
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers and uses less water than conventional cotton farming. This not only protects the soil and local ecosystems but also helps safeguard the health of the farmers who grow it.
According to the Soil Association, organic cotton farming encourages biodiversity, uses up to 91% less water, and produces almost 50% less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional methods. It’s a small difference in material — but a big difference in impact.
Why It Matters in My Work
When choosing fabric for my lampshades, I took a long time testing samples. The texture of the weave is especially important to me — I wanted something that feels natural, holds its shape, and still allows the fine detail of my illustrations to shine through.
A Closer Look at Sustainable Materials
The organic cotton I use is slightly thicker than the non-organic version I trialled, which gives the lampshade a sturdy, premium finish while letting that soft, golden light glow through. Every piece is hand-printed in small batches, then assembled slowly and carefully in my studio — no factories, no shortcuts, just craft and care.

Sustainability in My Life and Work
Sustainability isn’t just a part of my business — it’s a part of how I live. From being vegan to choosing long-lasting or second-hand items for my home, I try to make thoughtful decisions that care for the planet and its creatures. Choosing eco-friendly materials in my work is simply an extension of that.
I believe in creating beautiful, useful pieces that last — not fast trends or mass-produced clutter. Lampshades that light quiet corners, spark joy, and gently tell a story.
The Value of Handmade
There’s something special about pieces made in small batches — each one slightly different, each one made by someone who cares deeply about the process. When you choose handmade, you’re not just buying an object — you’re supporting slower, more sustainable practices.
I hope when you bring one of my lampshades into your home, you can feel the thought and purpose behind every stitch.
