Bringing the Woodland Indoors: Nature-Inspired Ideas for a Cosy Home

Some of my favourite ideas for new illustrations begin on a woodland walk. I love noticing the changing colours, watching for birds in the trees and keeping an eye out for wildlife. These little moments often find their way into my designs, bringing a touch of the countryside into our homes.

As autumn settles in, it’s a lovely time to think about how to make our homes feel warmer and more welcoming. You don’t need to redecorate an entire room; sometimes, changing the lighting, introducing a new colour or choosing a piece of artwork you love can make all the difference.

Create a Cosy Woodland Feel

Warm lighting is one of my favourite ways to make a room feel inviting, especially on darker evenings. An illustrated lampshade adds colour and pattern, while natural shades of green, rust, ochre and blue can help create a calm, nature-inspired space.

My Red Squirrels lampshade features scurrying squirrels among autumnal oak trees, while my Deer design captures the feeling of golden woodland. The Owl and Wren designs celebrate our garden and countryside birds, and the Otter lampshade was inspired by the wildlife living in the waterways near my home.

I love that each design has its own little story. They can bring a sense of woodland adventure to a child's bedroom or add a touch of illustrated nature to a grown-up reading corner or living room.

For more inspiration, the Woodland Trust's guide to autumn wildlife is full of ideas for appreciating and helping wildlife as the seasons change.

I’ve always believed that decorating a home can be a slow, personal process. Choosing pieces that mean something to you, whether inspired by a favourite animal, a memorable walk or a love of storytelling, can make a space feel much more like your own.
